You’re invited to explore the stories, landmarks and landscapes that helped shape our community and Colorado.

As Colorado marks 150 years of statehood and the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, Douglas County is launching a series of free community events, exhibits and educational experiences that connect today’s residents with the people and places that influenced the region’s early growth.

Long before Colorado became a state in 1876, Douglas County played an important role during the gold rush era. Early discoveries and mining interest in what is now Douglas County helped draw settlers and fortune seekers westward toward the Pikes Peak region, sparking population growth, new commerce and settlement that helped set Colorado on its path to statehood. Like much of the West, that era of growth also brought profound change to the land and to those who had long called it home.

Throughout the year, residents can take part in museum exhibits, historical presentations, family-friendly festivals, outdoor experiences and hands-on activities designed to bring local history to life. Programs will highlight transportation routes, early settlements, pioneer stories and events that helped shape the community residents know today.

The celebration series is designed for all ages, whether residents are longtime history enthusiasts or simply looking for a fun way to learn more about the community they call home.

“Douglas County’s story is woven into Colorado’s history,” said Commissioner George Teal. “These celebrations give residents a chance to experience the people, places and events that helped shape our state while honoring the legacy we continue to build today.”

Additional events and activities will be announced throughout the year, giving residents even more chances to participate in this once-in-a-generation milestone.
