Board of County Commissioners challenges Open Meetings decision to Supreme Court

On June 8, 2025, following an evidentiary hearing, the District Court held there was no evidence the County violated open meetings laws. Last week, the Colorado Court of Appeals reversed that decision.

Douglas County believes the appellate court’s unusual application of the Colorado Open Meetings Law is inconsistent with the 54-year-old statute and intends to challenge the decision in hopes of clarifying the law for all governments in Colorado and providing improved transparency and access to information.

In addition to petitioning for review in the Colorado Supreme Court, the County plans to request that the Court of Appeals’ decision be published for the benefit of the public and other local governments.

Douglas County remains steadfast in its commitment to transparency and adherence to Colorado Open Meeting laws.
